Artist's Statement

Artist/teacher Douglas Walton believes that when you are painting “wrong is right and right is wrong.” Knowing she knew ”wrong,” Jane was inspired to take his course. This was 12 years ago.

The five days with Walton set her on a path she never dreamed she would travel. Using watercolour as her medium, she found her paintings were large and full of colour … she had to continue.

Three years later Jane was trying acrylics and very shortly after, moved onto oils. She hasn’t looked back.

“This lush and seductive medium has given my paintings new life … there is a conversation that takes place when I paint with oils . . . an interaction on canvas that allows me to express myself more completely.”

Over the past 10 years Jane has organized workshops for and studied with selected teachers: Harold Klunder, Peter Kolisnyk, V Jane Gordon and James Gordaneer and Jody Joseph - all senior well established contemporary artists. They have mentored her very specifically: encouraging always that she find her own path, discover and nurture her uniqueness, and remain true to her authentic self.

“A new mode of communication, painting challenges my whole being. Marks are my language. When the medium, colour and composition ‘come together’ with my marks, the piece becomes poetry.”

Jane paints what she is inspired to paint. She has explored several series: teapots, landscape, the Madonna, Goddess and presently Goddess in Landscape.

A practicing Reiki Master, Jane lives in the Town of Mono with her husband.

“There are many blessings in my life. For me painting is one. How the brush or graphite makes my hand feel is essential from the outset. The beauty of some marks on canvas can leave me both ecstatic and impotent … each a challenge. Attempting to solve the problems presented on canvas is a challenge I am blessed with.”
